The Umbrella Academy burst onto our screens earlier this year with a bizarre blend of black comedy, sci fi and drama – focusing on a dysfunctional group of misfit superheroes attempting to battle the impending apolocalypse. There’s time travel, robots and childhood trauma in heaps, and I, for one, loved it.
If you haven’t given the show a chance, check it out. It’s delightfully dark, with a sharp script and characters that’ll stick with you long after the 10 episodes have finished. With that in mind, they’ll be plenty of spoilers for season one ahead, so beware…
Update September 2019: The official ‘Umbrella Academy’ Twitter invited us to meet the latest additions to the cast. And they’re super-powered, too! Looks as if Hargreeve’s kids aren’t the only ones with powers around here. I’ll let them do the talking.
When will The Umbrella Academy Season 2 be released?
I heard a rumor that Netflix have confirmed that season two is happening. Just kidding, that actually happened. On April 2nd, the official Umbrella Academy Twitter posted this little teaser, finally officially confirming that series two is in the works. Praise Klaus!

While Netflix haven’t officially announced the date for season 2, it’s safe to say that the second series of The Umbrella Academy will be released next year.
Although it didn’t come with any official date – it’s literally just an announcement saying that series two is happening – it’s safe to say that the show will be out next year. Series one debuted in February, so a spring-time release is looking hopeful. (I’ll be on the moon until then, see ya). Production has begun on the second season this summer, so a 2020 release date is highly likely.
Still, this announcement is better than nothing! At least we know we’ll get to see more adventures featuring our favourite band of rapscallion misfits once again! It’s just a matter of when…
How will season 2 of The Umbrella Academy kick off?
That is anyone’s guess. The finale of season one ended up with Vanya going ape-shit and inadvertantly shooting a beam of energy into the moon, causing it to come crashing down to Earth and start the apocalypse the gang had been so desperate to prevent. (It’s okay though, Vanya, we don’t blame you, boo. They should’ve treated you better!)
Before the moon squishes our fave superheroes to bits, Number Five whisks them all away through the power of time travel. Before they disappear into the abyss, we glimpse the seven appear as their younger selves, hinting at the premise of the next season. At least Number Five won’t be the only one trapped in a teenager’s body, right? Or perhaps the glimpse of their younger selves was more metaphorical, signalling them heading back in time? Until season two drops, we’ll be left scratching our heads. (And singing ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ over and over).
This is a similar premise for the second graphic novel in the series, with the band of misfits heading back to the 1960s where they get wrapped up in JFK’s assassination. Although it won’t follow the exact same beats as the graphic novel – season one deviated relatively wildly from the source material, Game of Thrones style – it’s all we’ve got to go on at this moment in time. It’s likely that they’re gonna spend a good chunk of the season attempting to prevent the events that unfolded in season one, trapped in the distant memory of the past.
Will Ben come back from the dead?
The sixth sibling in the clan, Ben, was dead for the entirety of season one, with only Klaus being able to communicate with him. While he started out as a dark and forboding character, he soon evolved into a fan-favourite, so it’s understandable that fans want him back in season two. But like, fully back. Living, breathing, the works.
And it could happen. In the season one finale, Klaus used a crazy amount of power to bring his sibling into the physical realm. What if he brought him back to life, fully? Given that Five whisks him off through the time vortex, anything’s possible.
What else will happen in season two?
You mean aside from time travel, attempting to prevent an apocalypse and a ghost coming back to life? Plenty, actually.
Remember that weird scene at the end of season one where Reginald Hargreeves is tending to a dying woman, as rockets jet off into the sky? Yeah, turns out he’s a space alien. At least, according to the comics, and it seems as though the show’s following suit. I mean, at least that explains why he’s such a prick to his children – he’s not even human.
The scene came out of the blue in the show, and we’re defo gonna need some confirmation and back-story on this as we delve deeper into the Academy’s lore in season two.
There’s also the matter of the other 36 children. Hargreeves managed to round up seven out of 43 kids, so what happened to the rest? Could they be super-powered villains going up against the gang, or perhaps more will join their ranks? Whatever happens in season two, this is a storyline that has to be pursued.
Klaus also needs to find a happy ending, after the show ripped out our hearts with the Dave storyline – my baby needs to find his happiness! And there’s also the ambigious ending of Hazel and his beloved Agnes jumping through time to avoid the apocalypse. Perhaps they’ll reunite with the siblings and they’ll all band together in an attempt to undo their past wrongs?
Can we also have Robot Mom™ make a miraculous recovery from the dead, too, please? I loved her.
It also remains to be seen whether they’ll continue to pursue the Luther/Allison love storyline. Fans didn’t exactly respond well to the two siblings being romantically involved, so it’ll be interesting to see how the writers tackle this particular issue.
Who’s set to return to the show?
The core cast are all set to return for season two. That includes Ellen Page as Vanya, Aidan Gallagher as Number Five, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison, David Castañeda as Diego, Robert Sheehan as Klaus, Tom Hopper as Luther and Justin Min as Ben. So it looks as though the theory of them reverting back to kids has been shot down, after all.
That’s all that’s been announced, so far. But I’d put money on Colm Feore reprising his role as Daddy Hargreeves, seeing as he was in every episode in season one.
Whatever happens in the second season of The Umbrella Academy, I just hope we get to see the gang bust some more sicks moves.
Update (August, 2019): These are supposedly the titles of the first five episode of Season 2. They haven’t been confirmed, so take them with a grain of salt.
