Diamonds, it’s been over three years since Marina dropped her critically acclaimed album ‘FROOT’. Three. Whole. Years. We don’t know about you, but it’s left us practically gagging for new music from the ‘Electra Heart’ songstress. So, to ease the painful gap between albums (this is set to be the longest we’ve been without an entirely new record since her debut!), we’ve scoured the internet for clues about #MATD4. Stick on your fave Marina tunes (‘Homewrecker’ still goes hard), and join us down the Marina rabbit hole…
When will Marina and the Diamonds’ next album be released?
While we don’t have a definite answer, our best guess would be early 2019. After the ‘FROOT’ era wrapped up, Marina stated that she was taking a break from the music scene to focus on other projects (like going to uni to study psychology, and her blog marinabook). The only glimmer we got of hearing Marina’s dulcet tones was when she dropped ‘Disconnect’, an aptly titled song with Clean Bandit – a band which, incidentally, her boyfriend belongs to.
Due to her hiatus, 2019 seems like an age away, but don’t despair! Marina herself confirmed on Twitter that we will hear new music this year! Whether that’ll be an album, a single, or frankly her singing Baa Baa Black Sheep into a microphone, at this point we’ll take anything.

This May, her record label tweeted that they were listening to new Marina demos, which means that the album may be coming sooner than expected. Marina has also recently deleted her Instagram, a move that many artists seem to be doing to build up hype in regards to releasing new records; particularly since Taylor Swift did so just before the release of ‘Reputation’. However, knowing Marina’s love/hate relationship with social media and even her phone, it could be more of a disconnect than a promotional move. Besides, Marina confirmed via Twitter on May 20th that she’s still writing new music, so a polished up, post-production release may be a little wait away yet.
However, a Marina and the Diamonds fan-page in Greece claims that new music is on its way this summer; though there’s no official confirmation other than mere rumours. We’re pinning our hopes on a new single released towards the end of the year with the album to follow in the first quarter of next year.

Who will be featured on the album?
As of yet, nothing’s been confirmed. Marina’s never had a featuring artist on any of her albums of yet, but there’s a first time for everything. From our internet sleuthing we wouldn’t rule our Marina’s BFF Lana Del Rey popping up on the album. They’ve been spotted a couple of times in each other’s company, updating their respective social media accounts to keep their fans satisfied. It could just be two friends hanging out, but, with both indie-pop icons set to drop a new record, it wouldn’t be impossible that the pals appear on each other’s records.

‘Sheezus’ hitmaker Lily Allen has also reached out to Marina, asking for a potential collaberation via Twitter. Marina only replied with a smiley face emoji, so read into that what you will. Still, we’ve got our fingers crossed for an unlikely collab between the two, who both explore themes of feminity and sexuality while singing with their tongues firmly plantly in their cheeks.
And of course, Clean Bandit could make an appearance, what with Marina dating Jack Patterson. Could a soppy romantic duet be on the cards for #MATD4? Only time will tell.
In March this year, Marina posted on Instagram a snipper of a song she ‘really liked’, with the caption ‘Emotional Machine’, perhaps hinting at the title of the track or, indeed, the album. A month later, Marina shared a potential ‘love song’ with the title ‘Superstar’, snapping a photo on her Twitter to show the first line: “Before I met you.”

A couple of low quality leaks have also surfaced around online; one rumoured to be titled ‘You’. Another is titled ‘I’m Not Hungry Anymore’. Whether these will make it onto the final record or not remains to be seen; but it shows our alternative-pop queen has indeed been hard at work over the course of her hiatus. Other rumours circulating the web hint at an anthem titled ‘There’s Nothing Wrong with You’. Another song registered in Marina’s name is called ‘If It’s Worth It’, so we already have a small fraction of a potential track-list on our hands.
What will Marina’s next album sound like?
At this point, it’s honestly anyone’s guess. All three of her albums, through from ‘The Family Jewels’ to ‘FROOT’ has had its own, distinct sound. ‘Electra Heart’ was more of an experimental phase, with Marina dipping her toe into the mainstream then EDM-dominated scene, whereas ‘FROOT’ was a lighter, more ethereal release. Marina’s shared a couple of short snippets from the upcoming album, and, in all honesty, it seems as if they’re more in the vain of ‘FROOT’ than her prior albums.
In short, only time will tell will when the album will be released or what it’ll sound like. But, rest assured, we will most likely have some new Marina music to bop to by the end of the year. Until then, we’ll be listening to ‘Obsessions’ on repeat.
